Classical Drawing Classes for Adults

Have you always wanted to learn to draw? Perhaps you enjoyed art at school, have returned to drawing after many years, or have been drawing for some time but want to develop greater accuracy and confidence. Or perhaps you already know about classical realism and are looking for an opportunity to learn the traditional methods behind this approach. These classical drawing classes for adults are a practical way to develop greater accuracy, observation and confidence in your drawing while remaining accessible whether you are completely new to drawing or already have experience. Based in my studio in Aboyne, on Deeside in Aberdeenshire, the classes focus on learning to really see: understanding proportion, structure, form, light and shadow, and translating what you observe into a convincing drawing. You will be introduced to techniques rooted in the traditions of classical European art, including observational drawing, proportion, tonal modelling and chiaroscuro — the use of light and dark to create a sense of volume and three-dimensional form. The teaching draws particularly on principles developed through the Renaissance and later academic traditions of drawing. You don't need to know what classical realism or chiaroscuro means before you come. These are methods you will learn through the process of drawing. The aim is not simply to teach you how to reproduce a particular image or style, but to develop your ability to observe, understand and draw with increasing accuracy. As your eye becomes more trained, so does your hand. Classes take place in small groups at my studio in Aboyne, Aberdeenshire, within easy reach of Aberdeen and the wider Deeside area.
