Service Description

The Classical Drawing Apprenticeship for teens is a structured, year-long programme of classes for young people who want to develop serious drawing and painting skills while beginning to discover their own identity as artists. Rooted in the traditions of classical drawing and painting, the programme develops observation, proportion, structure, anatomy, light, shadow, tone and perspective — time-tested skills that have formed the foundation of artistic training for generations. Year One — Drawing, Observation & Realism The first year focuses on drawing and learning to see deeply and accurately. Students progressively develop their ability to observe the human figure, understand its structure and translate three-dimensional form onto paper. An important part of this process is learning to slow down. In a world of rapidly changing images, short-format media, games and constant digital stimulation, the Apprenticeship offers time to look, concentrate and remain with an image long enough to really understand it. This is not about rejecting technology or the culture of today's young people. These are the realities of their generation and will inevitably influence the artists they become. Instead, the programme offers another way of engaging with images — through patience, concentration, observation and making. Year Two — Classical Painting Students who complete Year One can progress into classical painting, applying their drawing skills to colour, paint, light and form. Developing the Artist, Not Copying the Past Classical techniques are a foundation, not a formula. Students bring their own interests, ideas and ways of thinking, and are encouraged to develop their own visual language and artistic voice. The aim is not to teach young artists to copy the past, but to give them the skills, attention and visual understanding to discover how they want to make art themselves. The programme is suitable for beginners as well as young people who already draw and want to develop their skills further. Small groups allow close individual guidance and sustained progression. Based at my studio in Aboyne, Deeside, Aberdeenshire. Year One enrolment is currently open to new students. Students who have completed Year One can progress into Year Two.

Cancellation Policy

Once booked classes are non-refundable. Full payment is required to guarantee a place. Make sure you have read the class description bellow and that it is a good fit for you and the student. These classes are designed to be a little different from what you might expect, so I want to give you all the information upfront to ensure it’s the right fit for you or your child. My classes go beyond traditional art instruction to foster emotional health and wellbeing. Using visual arts as a vehicle, I focus on helping my students explore their inner and outer worlds, processing feelings and experiences that they may not always express with words. Each class will include mindfulness techniques, breath work, and role-playing exercises, all integrated with creative art activities. What makes my classes unique: Art as a Tool for Emotional Expression: They’ll encourage students to explore and express their emotions through art, helping them process their inner world in a creative, safe environment. Mindfulness & Breath Work: Each session includes mindfulness and breathing exercises to help develop emotional regulation and calm their minds. No Digital Tools: I intentionally avoid the use of digital art tools in my classes. Instead, I focus on fostering sensory stimulation and kinetic memory by encouraging us to work with their hands, feel different materials, and physically engage with their art. In a world where we are already exposed to so much digital technology, this creates a refreshing balance and supports holistic development. We may access a screen for research purposes. Small, Cohesive Group: I only take a few students per group to ensure a cohesive and supportive environment. This allows me to get to know each person individually and tailor my teaching to their unique needs. It also creates a safe space for new friendships to blossom. Role-Playing & Imagination: Imaginative role-playing will help us explore different emotions and experiences, fostering empathy and emotional understanding that will be channeled through art making. Non-Competitive Environment: There’s no pressure for perfection here. I celebrate creativity and self-expression in all its forms.
