Painting Techniques: Caravaggio

This practical painting workshop explores the techniques behind the dramatic light and shadow associated with the Old Masters, with a particular focus on Caravaggio and his use of chiaroscuro. Rather than simply looking at the finished appearance of a Caravaggio painting, we work through the process step by step to understand how that effect is constructed. You will explore how the placement of light, the relationship between light and dark, the positioning of the subject and the gradual modelling of form can transform a painting. The workshop introduces the principles of chiaroscuro — the strong contrast between light and shadow used to give figures volume, depth and presence. We look at how this technique was developed within the Italian Renaissance and taken to a dramatic new level by Caravaggio. The emphasis is on learning through doing. You will follow a structured painting process, gaining an understanding of how the different stages work together rather than simply attempting to reproduce a finished Old Master painting. This workshop is particularly suited to anyone interested in classical painting techniques, Old Master methods, realistic painting or chiaroscuro, whether you already have painting experience or simply want to understand how these effects are achieved. You don't need to be familiar with the terminology before you arrive. The techniques are explained and demonstrated throughout the workshop. Classes take place at my studio in Aboyne, Deeside, Aberdeenshire, within easy reach of Aberdeen.
