LITTLE DARLINGS Contemporary Figurative Painting Inspired by Dance & Childhood
Little Darlings was inspired by the particular atmosphere of an end-of-year ballet performance, where children appear transformed by their costumes, movement and the excitement of being on stage.
Rather than focusing solely on individual faces, the work draws attention to the physical language of childhood: posture, gesture, movement, costume and the distinctive ways young bodies occupy space. The children become part of a shared choreography, while each retains a sense of individuality.
As in Yellow Sneakers, Vandëm is interested in what happens when portraiture moves beyond the face. Pose, composition, negative space, texture and mark-making become important in allowing the viewer to form their own impressions of the figures and their relationships to one another.
There is also an intimacy here that connects the work to Family Album—the tenderness of childhood, the observation of children as they grow, and the fleeting nature of these moments. The paintings hold onto something of that experience without attempting to fix each child into a conventional portrait.
Little Darlings demonstrates Vandëm’s wider approach to figurative painting, in which the body and its gestures can communicate as much as facial identity.
